The son of Marlin and Estelle Jarman, Steve was born on November 22, 1938 in Phoenix, AZ , where he was raised with strong principles of faith and service to his Father in Heaven and those around him.
After graduating from Camelback High School, he was among some of the first missionaries called to serve in the Andes Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints where he spent 2 ½ years in Argentina, Chile and Peru teaching the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ in Spanish. Upon his return, Steve was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a signal intelligence analyst during the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Steve was sealed for time and all eternity to his sweet companion, Frances Richins, on March 5, 1965 in the Mesa Arizona Temple. He then went on to graduate on the Dean’s List from Arizona State University in 1968 with a BA in Business Administration. After graduation he began work as an industrial engineer for Kennecott Copper. This was the beginning of a long and successful career in the mining industry. A career which led him to work on all but 2 continents, while making a home for his family in Arizona, Missouri, Kentucky, and Utah, forming many treasured friendships along the way.
He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where he served selflessly in many callings including 3 full time missions with Mom to New York City, Northern Arizona, and Costa Rica.
Not a man of many words, Dad showed his love through service. His life was exemplified by kindness, humility, compassion, generosity, and hard work. He raised his family making an honest living with a strong back and a warm heart. Dad loved making people laugh with his trademark dry sense of humor and could always be found with a book in his hand, Wheel of Fortune or Jeopardy on the TV, and a bowl of candy nearby. He had a passion for all things fast and loud. From the many classic cars, he owned and rebuilt, to his love of military aircraft. He also loved military history, particularly that of WWII. He was good with his hands and enjoyed gathering his thoughts while working on his beautiful yards and vegetable gardens and was always up for an adventure rockhounding and exploring off road trails in the mountains.
One of Dad’s favorite roles developed in the last 30 years as he became “Grandpa Jarman and Grandpa Steve”. His eyes and smile would always light up when grandchildren and great grandchildren were around. He loved to read them books, play jokes, have rolled sock fights, start spit ball wars, and show them his latest projects.
Steve is survived by his wife of 58 years, Frances; his 5 sons: Steve (Jennifer), Mark (Beth), Craig (Amy), Brad, and Jimi (Sarah); 12 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Our hearts are comforted by our Savior’s plan of salvation and the eternal nature of families. We look forward to that wonderful day when we will be reunited again. Love you, Dad!
