
He was born February 10, 1924, in Ronceverte, WV to Thomas T. and Ida Masel (Gilmore) Fitzwater.
He graduated from Marlinton WV High School in 1942, received his undergraduate degree from Davis And Elkins College and his Master of Education degree from the University of Virginia. A WWII Navy veteran, he was a plane captain on Douglas SBD5 Dauntless dive bombers while stationed in the Pacific. He was a teacher of science, a coach, an athlete, a fan of most sports, an enthusiastic learner, and a man of deep faith.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Jolene McLaughlin Fitzwater and his second wife, Sara Lotts Fitzwater.
He is survived by his daughter with Jolene, Mary Jo McLaughlin Saez and her husband Sixto; two grandchildren, Blake and Afton Stowers; three great-grandchildren, Caleb, Cyrus, and Shaye Stowers; sisters and brothers-in-law, Audrey and George Friel, Allene and Edward Bridges, Alice and Robert Wilkinson, Linda and Harry Stewart; brother and sister-in-law Daniel and Eileen Hammonds; and Stony White; and all of "Uncle Fitz's" nieces and nephews.
His life will be celebrated and remembered on Saturday, May 17 at 11:00 a.m. at New Providence Presbyterian Church, Raphine, VA. Burial will follow in the church cemetery followed by a reception in the Fellowship Hall.
