David was the first child born to William “Bill” and Mary Weeks Johnson of Ashland, VA. David is survived by his wife of 21 years, Melanie Shopshear Johnson, his children Kathryn “Kayce” Clark Johnson, Anne “Annie” Margaret Feeney Johnson, Elizabeth “Bitsy” Cooper Johnson and her fiancée Amber Brooke Chadil, and by his step-daughters Olivia Shopshear and Victoria Russell Pace. David is also survived by his first wife Kathryn Cooper Johnson. David is survived by his siblings, Thomas D. (Madeleine) Johnson, Beverly (Steve) Bray and children David and Meghan, and Katie (Harvey) Gay. Born in Louisville, KY and raised in Ashland, VA, David attended Patrick Henry High School and completed his BS at Randolph-Macon College. He completed his MS in Engineering at Virginia Tech and his MBA at Virginia Commonwealth University, where he also completed ABD on a PhD in Computer Science. David proudly served 35 years in the U.S. Army Reserves. He worked for Dominion Energy, the Commonwealth of Virginia, and taught at VCU, St. Paul’s College, Paul D. Camp Community College and Henrico County Public Schools. David also worked at Media General in the Interactive Media Division. David valued knowledge and loved teaching; he read everything he could from Beowulf and musical theory to military history and computer programming. He found immense joy in the arts: listening to music of all kinds, studying piano and guitar, drawing and painting, and attending live performances. He loved playing cards, telling war stories of all kinds, and exploring family genealogy. David was a devoted cat lover. He was funny and outgoing and made friends everywhere he went. His absence will be keenly felt by all who knew him.
