

Crone, Glenn Patterson, 87, of Ashland, died on Tuesday, December 22, 2015. Born May 17, 1928, in Lancaster, New York. He graduated from Ithaca High School in 1946 and Cornell University in 1953 with a BS in Industrial & Labor Relations. He served in the US Army in Japan and the US Navy and Army in the states while attending Cornell. He worked at Standard Vacuum Petroleum Maatschappij, primarily in Indonesia. He moved to Richmond in 1960 to be closer to his brother, James P. Crone. While stationed at Ft. Lee in Army, became aware of Barksdale Theatre and became involved in theatre in Richmond. In 1960, he had his first Santa job at Azalea Mall, then moved on to Thalhimer’s downtown where he portrayed Santa until the store closed. He served as Santa for the Country Club of Virginia. He authored several books and performed in many radio, TV, film and theatrical productions. He married Sybel D. Crone on April 18, 1970. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. He was a devoted husband, father, brother (in law), uncle, and PawPaw. He is survived by his wife, Sybel; children Khaki (Kennedy), John, Bob (Cate), Susan (Mike), Ginny (Pete); sons in law Randy and John; grandchildren Michael, Clayton, Laura, Andrew, David (Sydni), Nicole, Matthew, Karl, Rachel, Mary, Ellie, Shannon, Rachael, Daniel, Sarah; great grandchildren Jeremiah, Brooke, Jonathan, and Maeve; brother-in-law Ralph (Marsha); sister-in-law Patricia; nephews James, Patrick (Tiffany); nieces Colleen, Cathleen, Carolyn (Jim), Mary (Mark), Lauren (Alan). He was preceded in death by his parents James and Inez; brother James; great granddaughter Ava. The family will receive visitors on Monday, December 28, from 6-8 pm and hold a funeral Mass on Tuesday, December 29 at 10 am both at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Ashland. A reception at O’Tooles, Richmond, will follow the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you follow Glenn’s giving spirit: When you give something to someone or do something nice for them, do it because you love them, or a donation to St. Ann’s, in his name.
