Smith, Harry L., Jr., 61, of Ashland, VA, passed away on February 20, 2014. He was preceded in death by his father, Harry L. Smith, Sr. He is survived by his mother, Gladys; step-dad, Glenn Middlebrook; and brother, Barry Lee Smith. Harry was a self-employed handyman. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coastguard and did four years of service. He was an avid swimmer, salutatorian of his high school graduating class and graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA with Honors. Harry received his Master’s degree at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He was lettered in football at Washington & Lee University. Harry was a wonderful son. A memorial service will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 24, 2014 at the Nelsen Funeral Home, Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA. Interment will be at Signal Hill Memorial Park at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial contributions to the Ashland Fire Department or the Ashland Rescue Squad.
