

Friday, January 26, 2024, at St. Mary' s Hospital. Janet was a true friend and supporter of many during her lifetime and will truly be missed. Her many talents included building additions, screened-in porches, decks, etc., on houses, using her ingenuity, creativity, and wit to keep everyone learning and laughing, and always expressing unconditional love for her beloved dogs, family, and friends. Her devotion, warmth, integrity, creativity, and fun-loving humor provided special and lasting memories to all who knew her.
Janet graduated from Patrick Henry High School in Hanover, VA, and received a B.S. from James Madison College (now James Madison University). She began her teaching and coaching career in Winchester for two years; taught health and physical education in Richmond City Public Schools for 34 years; provided leadership for Richmond's driver education program and went on to share her vast talents as the driver education specialist for 20 years at the Virginia Department of Education. In her "spare time", Janet coached, officiated, and was a teacher of teachers at Longwood University, Virginia Commonwealth University and J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College inspiring future teachers and leaving her legacy for a love of learning in many classrooms.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Bob and Bruce Ragland, brothers Billy and Bo Ragland and sister Gayle Ragland. She is survived by her Aunt Joyce Ragland, niece Kim Richie (Gary), nephew Michael Butler (Simone), great nieces Ryan Butler and Christyna Nealy, great-great nieces Mila Grace Billings and Evageline Nealy and great-great nephew Jonathan Nealy.
Special thanks are extended to the doctors and nurses at Bon Secours St. Mary's CCU and to the many friends who supported and visited her.
Relatives and friends are invited to Janet's visitation on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 from 10:00 AM until time of her Celebration of Life at 11:00 AM at Nelsen Ashland, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA. A reception will follow the service in the funeral homes reception hall. A committal service will occur Tuesday, February 6, 2024 at 2:00 PM at Westhampton Memorial & Cremation Park, 10000 Patterson Avenue, Richmond, VA 23238.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Janet's memory to St Jude's Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), 424 East 92nd Street, New York, NY 10128.
