John Thomas Donlon

John "Jake" Thomas Donlon, 88, of Glen Allen, VA, passed away peacefully on April 28, 2018 with all four of his children by his side. Jake, originally from Boston, Massachusetts, was the son of the late Peter and Katherine Donlon. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Marie Donlon, in 2003. After serving in the Army in the Korean War, Jake became a career Communications Officer for the Central Intelligence Agency with 30 years of service. Jake was very proud of his Irish heritage; he was a patriot and first generation American; and he loved his CIA family scattered around the globe. Jake did many tours of duty for the agency that included two in Okinawa, Japan and one in Frankfurt, Germany. He was recognized for his service with many medals and honors. After he retired he became an incredible caregiver to his wife of 48 years. Jake was a passionate Washington Redskins fan, and later he became a Hokie basketball fan. More than anything else he loved his family and following the activities of his children and grandchildren. He is survived by daughter Patricia Harrison and her husband Mark, and their daughters Kelly Elizabeth Mueller (Michael) and Mary Patricia Wrenn (Kenneth); son John Peter Donlon and his wife Patricia, and their daughter Erin Marie Donlon; son Matt Thomas Donlon and his sons Gregory Thomas Donlon and Peter Samuel Donlon; daughter Jennifer Chambers and her husband Brent, and their daughters Margaret Frances Chambers and Julia Elizabeth Chambers. Jake is also survived by his great-granddaughter Sarah Catherine Mueller, his brother Paul Donlon and his wife Carol, and their sons Paul Jr. and David. Jake also leaves behind his faithful companion dog Gracie. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 18, 2018 at St. Ann's Catholic Church, 105 S. Snead Street, Ashland, VA 23005 at 12 noon. Inurnment will be held at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Hanover Humane Society in Jake's honor.
