Madison Elsavan Shamburger, III (Van) of Doswell, died on February 8, 2015 at a local hospital after a sudden illness. Born in Zebulon, North Carolina on April 9, 1926 he and his family lived in Hanover since 1968. Van and Betty Shamburger were married for 63 years. Much of Van’s early professional life was as a consulting engineer and partner for J. Robert Carlton & Associates. After that company’s dissolution, Van joined Betty to assist her managing what was his father’s business, Shamburger’s Antiques & Reproductions in Richmond. Van is survived by his wife Betty Shamburger of Doswell; his sister Betsy Eggleston of Doswell; son, Pete Shamburger and wife, Beth Shamburger of Short Pump; daughter Bane Vaughn and her husband, Rob Vaughn of Herndon, Virginia; grandchildren Meg Pevarski and her husband Brendon, Carter Shamburger and Patrick Shamburger, all of Richmond. Van is also survived by niece, Sallie Xiradis and her husband George of Doswell and nephew, Richard Eggleston of North Carolina. A member of the greatest generation, Van’s education at Virginia Tech was interrupted to serve in the Pacific theatre of the U.S. Army before completing an engineering degree. After a brief stent at the highway department, he managed a large group of building professionals. Believing they could build anything, the group designed everything from the Indianapolis Coliseum built over a highway (and featured on the cover of Architectural Digest) to factories which canned vegetables and others that made spacecraft tiles. An active leader in the life of Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, the local Kiwanis where he received significant recognition for his life of service, and a community activist preserving Horseshoe Bridge, Van created an incredible array of friendships. However nothing was more important than his family relationships. The family will receive friends at a visitation on Friday, February 13 from 5PM to 7PM and A Service of Death and Resurrection will occur Saturday, February 14 at 11AM. Both will occur at Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, 201 Henry Street, Ashland, VA 23005. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts may be made in Van’s memory to one of the following: Duncan Memorial United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 247, Ashland, VA 23005, Kiwanis International Foundation, 3636 Woodview Trace, Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA (online at www.kiwanis.org/foundation).
