Robert Mason Lipscomb, 94, of Richmond (formerly of Laurelton, NY) passed away Thursday, April 2, 2015. Since the first of the year he had struggled bravely to battle the devastation of two major falls; however, he was not able to overcome all the obstacles. It seemed God needed him home, and Robert was ready to go. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Vera; his parents, William E. & Mary F. Lipscomb; and 8 brothers and sisters (Howard, Elva Pitt, Russell, Earl, Ella Mae Keeton, Gladys Miller, Harding, and Linwood). Though he and Vera had no children, he will be forever missed and remembered by many loving family members, including 20 nieces & nephews and over 40 great-nieces & nephews. Robert was a Naval WWII Veteran and was proud to serve his country. He served July 13, 1942 through November 4, 1947 on the following vessels: USS Buareus, USS Garfield Thomas, and the USS Minos. He received the Victory Medal, the American Area Medal (European-African-Middle Eastern, Asiatic-Pacific) and the Good Conduct Medal. Prior to joining the Navy, he was a riveter with Leptholp Construction Co. in Richmond, VA. After leaving the Navy, he worked for several metal refining companies, and ultimately retired November 1985 from Englehardt. Uncle Robert died as he lived: with a great attitude, a firm handshake, and always a kind and cheerful word. He was a true gentleman, and an amazing listener with a great sense of humor. He loved a good joke, had a quick wit, and kept a sharp memory right up until he passed. His greatest love was Vera and he always placed family and friends over himself. He loved all animals but cats were his favorite, and he is survived by Kitty Kat who sorely misses him. He was a great husband, brother, uncle and friend. He was a quiet man with a huge heart and a gentle spirit. All who loved him will miss him, and all who knew him loved him. A memorial service will be held at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Highway, Ashland, VA on Friday, April 17, 2015. His Pastor, David Renner of New Home Community Baptist Church will conduct the service. Family and friends will gather at 5:30 p.m. with the service to commence at 6:30 p.m. Mr. Lipscomb’s remains will be interred at Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, NY. In lieu of flowers, feel free to make memorial contributions to a charity of your choice.
