I met Tom for the first time on the softball field during a BCBSNCA corporate softball league game. I had only been working at GHI for a couple of weeks. Every time I saw Tom after that game he treated me like I had known him for 20 years. I never forgot how friendly he was to me after just a short time of knowing him.

Love to you, Claire, and to your family.  I didn't know Tom, but know he was dear to his family and friends and will be sorely missed.

My deepest and heartfelt condolences to Claire, Tom's family, and his many, many friends. I will never forget all of the good times we had playing softball at the "Battle of the Blues" and with the "Diehards". Tom was super competitive and "loved" to win - which he did often. He was a good friend and had such an infectious laugh and a great outlook on life. I will sorely miss him and will always be thankful that he considered me a friend. Rest In Peace Hawk!

Hey, Claire. Bason sent me the news. Please accept my condolences. I will always remember Tom's competitiveness on the softball field (I remember other good stuff also, but the softball stuff most). Especially his pitching: he knew I liked pitches inside (so that I could try to pull the ball) - he NEVER threw me an inside pitch - NEVER. He had my number, he knew it and I knew it. Maybe that's a silly memory, but I can still see his little grin as he threw it outside.
Kiefers are all good. Scott is 45!

What do you say when you lose a best friend?  I am sure whatever I say won't be enough.

My heartfelt condolences to Tom's family and friends.

I met Tom in the 70s.  We were bitter rivals on softball teams (bitter is an understatement).  At some point we merged the best players from our two teams and formed a team that Tom organized and managed.  He was as competitive as anyone I have ever met.  We were very good and won almost all of our  games but Hawk, was not pleased if we did not play the game correctly.  He hated mental errors.

Later we played football pools together as partners, did a lot of snow skiing here locally and in Vermont and out west.  We also went to parties, had cookouts, and the like.

When Tom and Claire moved to St Louis, Tom and I stayed in touch but not as frequently.  When they returned to Richmond, Tom, Claire, my wife (Carey), and I started traveling together.  We went to spring training for his beloved Cardinals in Florida, the Florida Keys, Ireland, Amsterdam and a river cruise up the Rhine, a New England/Canada Cruise (I am sure I left some out).  More recently Tom wanted to go to Alaska, so we booked a land/sea cruise in August of this year.  I am so sorry that he won't be able to go, he was really looking forward to it.

When the stories fly about the old days, Tom is front and center.  He loved and was very proud of his family.  He loved competing in athletics, football pools, you name it.  He loved his Steelers and the Cardinals.

I miss Tom tremendously, he was a great rival, teammate, manager, and travel partner but most of all I miss him as a close friend.

I was so very sorry to hear of Tom's passing.  There is so little that anyone can say to help ease the pain but, if there is anything I can do to help, please let me know. Brunch at our home was the first time my husband & I spent a social occasion with Tom & Claire which we all thoroughly enjoyed.  We knew then from our conversation that we had a lot of interests in common.  Tom's great sense of humor, sports interests, a DIYer and easy going manner let us know a good friendship was on the horizon.  We are saddened that time wouldn't afford us more of those happy, fun gatherings.  A good man, faithful friend and loving husband, he well be dearly missed.  We know you are up there, Tom, watching over us.  To Claire, Kelly, Shannon, Chris & families, our deepest heartfelt sympathy and Love.
