

He was preceded in death by his parents, William Huylar and Daisy Powers Willis, his wife of 63 years, Catherine Gray Willis; brothers William and Carlton Willis; sisters, Edith Swinson, Evelyn Allanson, and Roselle Alvis.
He is survived by his son, Thomas David Willis (Brenda), daughter Cathy Willis Waldrop (Charles) granddaughters Cheryl Chandler (Eric), Leslie McCrea (Chris), Casey Warren (Patrick), and Jennifer Bowles (Brandon), 11 great grandchildren, and devoted caretakers Mary Bailey and Linda Alford.
Tom was a devoted lifelong member of Hopeful Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, sang in the choir, and held numerous other positions in the church. He was a member of the "Hopeful Six", a men's choral group of friends, who loved to perform for the senior community. Tom served his country in the army during the Korean War. Following his military service, Tom worked at Cross Bros. Grocery 63 years. He was co-owner of Cross Bros. for 44 years. He enjoyed welcoming people to the community with a smile and a "Wonderoast Chicken." Tom proudly worked alongside his children and grandchildren, enjoying the fruits of his labor. Tom and his Cross Bros. family were well known for providing special services to its loyal customers who became like extended family.
The family will receive friends from 4pm to 7pm on Monday, November 1, 2021 at Nelsen Funeral Home, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland, VA 23005. A funeral service will be held at 12pm on Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Hopeful Baptist Church, 14340 Hopeful Church Rd, Montpelier, VA 23192 where a graveside service will follow.
