

LACKEY, William Miles, of Mechanicsville, died Friday, May 2, 2014. He was born on December 30, 1929 in Conover, N.C., son of the late George Oscar and Cora Pope Lackey. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Robert Niles Lackey; and a grandson, Brian George. He married on May 21, 1949 in Hickory, N.C., to his loving wife, Gwendolyn S. Lackey. He is survived by his son, Stephen Randall Lackey (Angela); and his daughter, Gwyneth L. George (Frank); two grandsons, William A. George and Stephen A. Lackey; a granddaughter, Jeanette K. George. He is also survived by a great- grandson, Joseph George-Thomas. He moved to Norfolk in 1960, and was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where he served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was one of the founders and a charter member of Hope Lutheran Church in Kempsville, Va., in the seventies. He was very active in the Boys Scouts. He served on the Kempsville Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad, also serving as their chaplain. He moved to Mechanicsville in October of 1978 and joined Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Ashland, Va. He became very active in the church until his health began to fail in recent years. He worked for Economy stores in their Dairy division (Camilla Dairy) from 1960 until about 1975. He joined Richfood Dairy in 1978 and retired in 1992, after which he drove for the Ashland Chapter of the Red Cross for several years. He was also a member of the Ashland Moose Lodge. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Nelsen Funeral Home Reid Chapel, 412 S. Washington Hwy., Ashland. Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 7, 2014, at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 11515 Ashcake Rd., Ashland, Va. 23005. Interment will follow in Signal Hill Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make memorial gifts to Holy Cross Lutheran Church.
