Elaine (Marcenko) Kyle (age 94) passed away peacefully on August 23, 2023. She was born at the family farm near Elm Springs School in the Wood Mountain District of Saskatchewan on July 16, 1929. She was the eldest daughter of Daniel and Mary and attended Elm Springs School until grade nine, Ambassador School in Wood Mountain for grades ten and eleven, and graduated with a grade twelve diploma from the Assiniboia High School.
A nursing career was in Elaine’s plans, but she had to wait until her 19th birthday. Meeting Norman Kyle changed those plans and they were married on September 19, 1948, making a home in Assiniboia and raising their family there.
Being a homemaker did not stop Elaine from having an active lifestyle. She participated in bowling leagues, Legion bowling, curling leagues, was a Boy Scout leader, was on the executive of the figure skating club for several years, a member of the Legion Auxiliary, and a member of the renowned ‘Entertainers’. In 1972, Elaine became a career woman accepting employment at the Co-op Pharmacy where she worked for 22 years. For several years after she’d retired from the Co-op, the people whom she’d met while she worked there were still referred to as her customers. Retirement meant more time on the golf course with Norman and their friends, or golfing alongside the Golden Girls, a group of women, all retired, who loved to golf and have fun. The golf games were usually followed by a card game or birthday celebration in the Clubhouse. Elaine found joy in living, even in some of the toughest moments. She had the capacity to search for happy memories and moments, and visiting with old, new, or even strangers was always a highlight in her day. Her time spent at the United Church, at choir practice or during church services was always enjoyable and the members of the congregation became an extended family for her.
In February 2021, at the age of 91, Elaine’s mobility was decreasing and she moved into the Long-Term Care ward at the Assiniboia Union Hospital. She embraced her time there and the wonderful staff enabled her love of visiting, which had been stalled during Covid. Elaine loved retelling the conversations she had with staff members, explaining where they lived, their families, etc. Each and every staff member that she met while living there became a person of great interest to her.
Elaine was predeceased by: her parents Daniel and Mary Marcenko, husband Norman, son Bruce, nephew Grant Hoffas, sister Valerie Hoffas, brother-in-law Alden Hoffas, sister-in-law Irene Marcenko and Norman’s parents, Charles and Anna Kyle, brothers-in-law Cameron Ealey, Russell Kyle, Farrell Kyle, Wayne Kyle, Duane Gould and Irvin Gronsdahl; sisters-in law Hazel Kyle and Laverne Gould; niece Brenda McIntyre and nephews Bruce Gould and Jeffrey Ealey. Elaine is survived by: her four children, sons Gordon and Ken; daughters Laurie Karst (Trevor) and Joan Bishop (Barry); eight grandchildren, Joshua Kyle (Kirsty), Curtis Karst (Dezerae Cale), Sarah Karst (Sean Kuling), Jill Bishop (Cassidy), Blair Bishop (Nichole), Neal Bishop (Emily), Kate McFeely (Colby) and Amy Kroeger (Luke); ten great-grandchildren, Jachin, Abigail Elaine and Corbin Bishop, Charles, George and Felix Bishop, Oliver and Abel Bishop, Makoa Karst Ohama, and Anthony McFeely; brothers George, Daniel (Marilyn) and John (Audrey); brothers-in-law Lester Kyle (Bette) and Randy Kyle; sisters-in-law Myrna Ealey, Eldeen Gronsdahl, and Shirley Burgeson (Jack); and nieces and nephews on both the Marcenko and Kyle sides of the family.
Elaine’s family cannot thank the Long-Term Care staff enough for the loving care they gave their mother for the two and a half years she spent with them, and for the compassion and support for Elaine and her family during her final days on earth. The family also wants to thank Reagan Rasmussen (Nurse Practitioner) and Ross Funeral Home for taking care of their mom, and the Assiniboia community for always asking about her, and caring about her and her family. At Elaine’s request, her Celebration of Life was not held at her beloved United Church because she did not want anyone with mobility issues tackling the many stairs. Her funeral was held at the Messiah Lutheran Church in Assiniboia at 3:00 pm on September 23, 2023. Gary K. Miller, who personally knew Elaine, facilitated the service. Tribute was presented by grandchildren, Jill Bishop and Blair Bishop. Scriptures read by grandchildren, Neal Bishop and Sarah Karst. Music Ministry by grandchildren and their spouses, Kate (Colby) McFeeley, Amy (Luke) Kroger and nephew, Dennis Marcenko. Urn bearer was son, Ken Kyle. A meal followed at the Prince of Wales Complex because Elaine wanted everyone attending her funeral, especially those who travelled from a distance, to be fed before they journeyed home. Private family interment at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK. Donations in memory of Elaine may be made to the Assiniboia Regional Park Golf Course for kitchen improvements.
