
He was born on April 20, 1935 in Rockglen. Larry went to Teachers College in Moose Jaw after graduating from high school. His first job was teaching in Killdeer where he taught for three years. He then went to teach in Rockglen. In 1960, he met and married Helen "Ruth" LaBay. In 1963, Larry, Ruth and baby Lynn went to Vancouver so that Larry could further his education. They returned to Rockglen and continued teaching. In 1967, Larry quit teaching and started farming with Ruth and their three children when they took over Ruth's parents’ farm at Killdeer. In 1982, it was his son Lynn's turn to farm on the LaBay homestead. Larry and Ruth then moved to Rockglen where they resided till Larry's health forced him to go to a nursing home.
For many years Larry came to the farm every day during seeding and combining time. The winters were always dedicated to travelling which he thoroughly enjoyed. Larry enjoyed visiting with his many friends and relatives. He also enjoyed playing the piano and guitar, singing, dancing, painting, cake decorating, pottery, flower arranging, stained glass and woodworking.
Larry is predeceased by his parents Alfred and Mabel Bloom, his brothers Ralph and wife Dorothy (Oakes), and Floyd and wife Nannie (Hansen), sister Leila and husband Leonard Borgerson, and brother-in-law Vic Gording.
Larry is survived by his wife Helen "Ruth" (LaBay), his sisters Myra Gording and Vivian (Charlie Jarton); sons Lynn (Jo-Anne Brochu) and Kevin (Gail Howlette) and daughter Cheryl (John Quattrin); grandsons: Cory, Tyler, Mitchell, Justin and great-grandsons Nate and Liam, many nieces and nephews and many loyal friends.
A Celebration of Larry’s life was held at the Rockglen Community Hall on Thursday April 2, at 2:00 p.m. Interment took place at the Rockglen Cemetery. Donations in memory of Larry may be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association. Arrangements entrusted to Ross Funeral Service, Assiniboia, SK.
