Mr. Lloyd Allen Blackwell

Lloyd Allen Blackwell was born on July 24, 1917 to William and Mabel Blackwell on the Blackwell homestead, 12 miles southeast of Assiniboia, SK. Lloyd was 15 months and his sister 6 weeks old when their Mother passed away during the 1918 flu epidemic. William moved in with his parents, who helped raise the children.

Lloyd married Alta M.I. Halverson on November 11, 1937. They raised beef cattle and farmed the Blackwell homestead. Over the years the farm expanded. Lloyd was the third generation on the homestead. They had four children Bill, Allen, Grant and Loretta. As the sons became adults they joined Lloyd in farming.

Lloyd and Alta were active in various community activities, including the Assiniboia Agricultural Society, Messiah Lutheran Church, the Rural Fire Protection Association, and the Willows 4-H Club for which Lloyd was Leader for seven years. He was also delegate for the United Grain Growers. Lloyd was a very quiet and reserved person who believed in hard work. The farm, his family, friends and church were very important to him.

In 1980, Lloyd and Alta retired and moved into Assiniboia. Prior to and following retirement they did some travelling which both enjoyed significantly. They were married 65 years. Lloyd was a devoted husband during Alta’s illness and through her passing.

Lloyd moved into Prairie Villa in May, 2005. In 2007 he met Dorothy Tomlinson Short. They were married in June, 2008 and resided at Prairie Villa.

Lloyd was predeceased by his wife Alta (2002); his parents William (1965) and Mabel (1918); his grandson Robert (1984); his sister Grace Winslow and her husband Paul; his sisters-in-laws and brothers-in-laws: Iona (Jack) Weal, Obe (Tina) Halverson, Loris (Keith) Crumley. Lloyd is survived by his wife Dorothy, his children: Bill (Carol), Allen (Elaine), Grant (Roberta) and Loretta, as well as nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and Dorothy’s family.

Funeral Service was held at Messiah Lutheran Church, Assiniboia, SK on Wednesday, September 5, 2012. Donations in Memory of Lloyd may be made to the Messiah Lutheran Church Memorial Fund or Prairie Villa Inc. Memorial Fund. Interment followed at Mount Hope Cemetery, Assiniboia, SK.
