Thomas Alexander Cairns was born on September 12, 1927 in Willow Bunch, SK, son of Robert and Mildred. He grew up on the family farm in the RM of Willow Bunch and attended Clydesdale School and Coronach High School. After graduating, he worked on the family farm and in Coronach for a time as a mechanic and entrepreneur. Tom married Joyce Vancuren on June 20, 1953 in Coronach, SK. Following their marriage, Tom and Joyce made their home in Coronach until moving to the farm in 1957 where they lived and raised their family until returning to Coronach in 1987. Tom’s beloved wife, Joyce, passed away on November 23, 1993. He was remarried on July 1, 1995 to Agnes Travland.
Tom was an active member of the Coronach Alliance Church, serving as an Elder and Sunday School teacher. He was a long time member of the Gideons International in Canada, on the board of Glad Tidings Bible Camp and he served on the Coronach School Board for many years.
In 1966, Tom’s custom combining operation was featured on the CBC’s TV series This Land of Ours. Tom had a long and varied career where it seemed there was not a thing he couldn’t build or fix. In his leisure time, he enjoyed reading the Western Producer and keeping up with the latest in farming trends on YouTube. In the last decade of his life, he decided he needed to learn how to text on a flip phone and as a result, he upgraded to a smartphone, which became a constant companion for his remaining years.
Tom took an interest in everybody that he met. He was especially a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Tom’s family and his faith were always first in his life.
The family would like express a special thank you to all the staff at the Coronach Health Centre for the wonderful care and attention that they provided to Tom over the past four years while he was in their care.
