She was the fifth child of ten, and was born on the farm southwest of Kincaid, SK. Her parents Frank and Suzanna Dotzler came to Canada from Minnesota in 1909.
Veronica was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Suzanna; her husband Fred in 1990; her four sisters Katherine, Frances, Mary, Anne, and their husbands; her five brothers Adolph, Ed, Frank, Clarence, and Kenneth. Mom is survived by three daughters, Hazel Blake, Myrtle Usherwood, and Shirley (Kim); six sons, Donald (Barb), Glen, Mervin (Lenore), David (Janet), Doug (Yvonne), and John (Tanya); 18 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren , two great-great-grandchildren, and two sisters-in-law.
At the age of four, Mom went to Aitken, Minnesota, to live with her aunt Annie and uncle John Insley beside the Mississippi River. She returned two years later to begin her education at Hudson School near their home, often walking 1½ miles to school.
On November 22, 1935, Veronica married our dad, Fred A. Schwab, son of Andrew and Katherine Schwab. They lived on the home farm south of Meyronne, SK, until August 1937, when they moved to Fairy Glen, SK, near Melfort. With one daughter, Hazel, in tow, they took up farming as there was no crop in the Meyronne area. They returned in September 1939 to the home farm with another daughter, Myrtle, in tow.
Farming was their way of life, milking cows, separating the milk to ship cream, feeding pigs and cattle for meat, chickens and turkeys for meat and eggs, huge gardens for fresh vegetables. They canned beef and chickens for winter food. They were truly self-sufficient, buying only the sugar and flour at the local store. They were hard workers and had enough energy left to show care and compassion as they raised nine children.
In December 1978, Mom and Dad moved to Meyronne, SK. They enjoyed life there. Mom enjoyed playing cards, bowling, knitting, and cross-stitching. She had completed enough cross-stitch pictures to give to each of her grandchildren.
Mom moved to Prairie Villa, a personal care home in Assiniboia, SK, in February 2008, which was her home until her passing. There she joined the choir, played bingo, enjoyed the entertainment, and attended church services held there.
Mom, you have been an inspiration to all of us. Our lives have been richer because of you. You will remain in our hearts forever. Rest Mom, we know that you truly are at peace.
