Pearl was born August 14, 1924 in Wyndmere, ND to Peter and Mary (Pederson) Huseth. She was raised on the family farm in Freeman Township, ND along with her six brothers and one sister. After graduating from Wyndmere High School, Pearl earned her teaching certificate and taught in McLeod, ND’s one room schoolhouse during WWII (with her youngest brother, Allan, as one of her students). She married John Anthony Schmit in 1944 and they had three children, Barbara, John Jr. (Jack), and Bonita (Bonnie). The Schmits moved to Long Beach, CA in 1952, making trips home in the summers to visit their families. After their children were raised, Pearl and John divorced. In March 1975, Pearl married Charles (Chuck) Taylor, creating a blended family of six children. The Taylors retired to the Central Coast in the late 1980’s where Pearl continued to be a devoted member of Bethel Lutheran Church. She was a cherished member of her church choir, as she loved to sing and play piano. She was an avid volunteer throughout her life. Pearl was an exceptional homemaker who will be remembered for her love of family, children, and her beautiful smile. Her style and grace were universally admired and she was kind to everyone she met. Her family will miss her gingersnap cookies, brownies, lefsa, apple pie, and especially her cuddles and hugs – the best imaginable! She was truly a special daughter, sister, cousin, wife, mother, grandma, great grandma, aunt and friend. She will be missed by all.
She is survived by her children: Barbara Bigger, Jack (Renu) Schmit, Bonnie (Kurt) Kennedy, Judy Young, Tama (Greg) Holve, Chuck (Claire) Taylor; Grandchildren: James Stutz, Nick (Amy) Innerbichler; Donovan (Nicole) Schmit, Joe (Chandra) Schmit; Luann (Todd) Arneson and Amy Chidester; Taylor (Sara) Holve, Vanessa (Ryan) Campbell; Wendy Edwards, Wesley and Mitchell Taylor; Tony and Robbie Young; Great Grandchildren: Sean and Evan Innerbichler; Jordyn, Decker and Harper Schmit; Jett and Haizley Schmit, and Colby Calloway; Rosemary, Johnny and Mikaela Arneson; Nico and Owen Holve; Jameson Campbell; Dustin and Sara Edwards; Kendal and Tristen Taylor; and Scarlett Taylor; brother, Allan (Barb) Huseth; sisters-in-law Myra Huseth, Anita Huseth, Beverly Huseth and brother-in-law George Zentgraf, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Mary; brothers Bennie, Norman, Herbert, Marvin and Irvin Huseth; sister Lois Zentgraf; husbands John Schmit and Chuck Taylor; son-in-law, Jack Bigger; and great-grandson Zachary Young.
Pearl will be buried alongside her parents, grandparents, and many family members at Freeman Cemetery, McLeod, ND. Due to COVID, a memorial service will be held in the summer of 2021. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Bethel Lutheran Church, 295 Old Country Road, Templeton, CA, 93465.
