He was raised by godly parents Frank and Glenna Boruff. His mother led him to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ in their home when he was twelve years of age. In September of 1956, he married his high school sweetheart Jo Ann (Graves) Boruff, and they enjoyed fifty-two precious years of marriage together. After graduating from the University of Tennessee with a Master's degree in Industrial Engineering, he worked in the aluminum manufacturing industry for fifteen years. Yet, at the age of thirty-six, he felt the unmistakable call of God on his life, a calling that led him to leave behind his career and step into full-time Christian service. This surrender to the Lord was the beginning of a fruitful ministry that would span decades and touch many lives.
In 1972, the Lord led him to start the River Lake Baptist Church in Waverly, Tennessee, which he pastored for twelve years. In 1984, he became the pastor of Greenbrier Baptist Church in Greenbrier, Alabama, and served there for ten years.
Then, in December of 1994, the Lord led him to join the pastoral staff at Madison Baptist Church in Madison, Alabama, where he would serve for nearly twenty years. During his time at Madison Baptist Church, God used him mightily in many areas of ministry. In addition to regularly preaching the Word of God, he served as an adult Sunday school teacher, Bible college vice president and professor, Christian high school math teacher, and leader of the visitation ministry.
For several years he was an integral member of a team that regularly ministered at a local youth detention center. Throughout his ministry he worked diligently to personally communicate the Gospel and lead lost souls to Christ. During his time as Associate Pastor at Madison Baptist Church, his burden for missions led him to take missions trips to Mexico and Africa.
He also preached in many churches throughout North Alabama and southern Tennessee. For over thirty years, he was a dedicated board member of the Bible and Literature Missionary Foundation in Shelbyville, Tennessee, an organization that provides Bibles and gospel literature for Independent Baptist missionaries worldwide. He gave generously of his time, resources, and heart to this ministry.
Throughout his years of faithful service as a preacher of the Gospel, the Lord used him to lead many souls to Christ and to help many Christians grow in grace. Brother Bill Boruff will be remembered by us as a godly husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who knew the Lord Jesus Christ as his personal savior. By the grace of God, he had the godly testimony of being an intelligent, principled, and diligent man who was always quick to help others.
Those who were touched by his ministry will remember Billy Kay Boruff as a preacher, Bible teacher, independent Baptist pastor, and devoted servant of God who believed the Bible with all his heart and sought daily to live out the Lord’s truth for the glory of God. Though we grieve his passing, we rejoice in the fact that he is now in the glorious presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, whom he loved and served so faithfully throughout his life.
Billy Kay Boruff is survived by his children Sharon Clark of Waverly, Tennessee, daughter Pamela Brown and son-in-law Brian Brown of Madison, Alabama, son Bradley Boruff and daughter-in-law Julie Boruff of Charlotte, North Carolina, and daughter Rebecca Shook and son-in-law Stephen Shook of Durham, North Carolina. He is also survived by seventeen grandchildren: Karen Clark, Melinda Noe and husband Henry; Dorinda Costa and husband Zack; Regina Mixon, husband Robbie and children Ellis and Jaci; Andrew Brown, wife Sarah and children JoAnn, Hannah and Anna; Laura Brown, Stephen Brown, wife Priya and son James; David Brown, Alissa Brown, Sarah Brown, Kevin Boruff, wife Lauren and children Kate, Anna, and Ryan; Kyle Boruff, wife Beth and children Bradley, Charlotte, Kimberly and Abigail; Eric Boruff, Nathan Shook, wife Brenna and son Maverick; Breanna Shook, Austin Shook, Erica Shook.
