A recent high school graduate, Michael worked as an intern at a software development company, 3-GIS. He enjoyed video games and being part of multiple online communities, and he was working to become a professional streamer while also planning to start college next fall. Mostly, though, he loved hanging out with his friends and family and making the people he cared about laugh.
Michael is survived by, and incredibly loved by, his parents Jeff and Tracy Szappan; his sister Aly Szappan and her boyfriend Kaleb Carter; his grandparents Rich and Bonnie Anscomb, Wanda Dean, and Ken and Tina Szappan; his aunts and uncles Dennis and Sara Boyce, Jeff and Aubree Anscomb, Andy and Rachel Szappan, Laurel Hammond, and Amber Weber; and his many cousins, including Lilly and Jace Boyce and Daphne Anscomb.
A celebration of life will be held for Michael at the Alabama Center for the Arts at 133 2nd Ave in Decatur 3M Room (Room 118) on Thursday, October 26th from 5-7. Michael would have hated a formal service, so this will be an informal event. The family would like to invite everyone to stop in to share memories or just to chat. Please note that this is in the art/classroom building, not the theater building.
Another celebration of Michael's life will be held at American Legion Hall at 3221 M-76 in Standish, Michigan on Sunday, October 29th from 2-5pm. Again, this will be an informal event and everyone is welcome to drop in at their convenience.
An additional online memorial will be held at a later date for Michael's family, friends, and online communities around the country and the world.
Michael's family is grateful to everyone who has helped us in this difficult time, who has reached out to tell us they care, and to everyone who loves Michael. He touched more people than he knew, and we are glad that so many people knew the wonderful person he was.
In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (afsp.org/chapter/alabama) or your local suicide prevention organization.
