Shirley Christopher Wood

She was born September 19, 1932 to Amos and Mamie Sneed Christopher and died Saturday, July 15, 2023 in Athens, Alabama.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 50 years, Bobby Wood; a daughter, Susan Nan Wood; brothers, Sneed Christopher and Billy Rich Christopher; sisters, Helen Christopher Patton and Robbie Nelle Livingston.

Mrs. Wood is survived by three children Mary Nelle Clem, Jesse Christopher Wood, and Lou Ann O’Rear (Mike); two grandchildren, Mary Catherine Folmar (Tyler) and William O’Rear; and, one brother Jim Christopher of Athens, Alabama.

Shirley was a graduate of Athens High School and a graduate of Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) where she earned a degree in Elementary Education and was named Loveliest of the Plains. She later earned her Master’s Degree in Education from Alabama A&M University. Mrs. Wood taught 30 years in Athens City Schools at Athens Elementary School and Julian Newman Elementary. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Athens, enjoyed playing bridge, visiting Gulf Shores, and spending time with her grandchildren whom she adored and was passionate about her Auburn Tigers.

Visitation will be at McConnell Funeral Home Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a graveside service at 11:00 a.m. in Roselawn Cemetery with Tee Jackson officiating.

Pallbearers will be William O’Rear, Tyler Folmar, Allen Christopher, Adam Christopher, Tom Varnell, and Mike May.
