

A native of Wilkes County, GA, Mrs. Dixon was the daughter of the late Troupe Mercer Harris, Sr and Martha Jones Harris and was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Ellis H. Dixon, Jr; brother, Troupe Mercer Harris, Jr and special friend, Mary Helen Gresham. She was a graduate of Washington-Wilkes High School and received her bachelor’s degree at Georgia State College in Milledgeville and her master’s degree in Library Science from Peabody College in Nashville, TN. Mrs. Dixon served as the high school librarian at Talluelah Falls School, librarian at the University of Georgia, and was the children’s librarian and public librarian in Augusta, GA. She helped start and served as librarian at Athens Academy for several years and volunteered in the Athens Regional Medical Center Library. Mrs. Dixon also volunteered as Boy’s Club librarian and was an active volunteer with Meals on Wheels.
As a charter and active member of Beech Haven Baptist Church, Mrs. Dixon started and managed the Beech Haven Baptist Church Library and taught the 2 and 4 year old Sunday school classes.
Survivors include daughters, Laura Dixon Hooten and husband, Joseph Hooten III of Greensboro, NC and Dr Jane Dixon Tillitski and husband, Steve of Athens, GA; son, Dr. Ellis Howard Dixon III of Atlanta, GA; sister, Cornelia Harris Johnson of Washington, GA; grandchildren, Joseph R Hooten IV, Thomas Dixon Hooten, Jonathan Stephan Tillitski, Robert Zechariah Tillitski, and Laura Jane Tillitski, and great-grandchildren, Daley Sullivan Hooten, Joseph R Hooten V, Lee Ann Maxine Hooten, Raegan Maris Hooten, Avery Paige Hooten, Emily Jane Arkansas, William Ellis Arkansas, Audrey Grace Arkansas, Emma Blake Tillitski, Luke Holden Tillitski, Elle Westbrook, Lilly Suzanne Tillitski, and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held 10:30AM Wednesday, September 14th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Dr. James Griffith officiating. The family will receive friends after the service at Bernstein.
