The native and life-long resident of Athens was the son of the late Jake and Lucy Thornton Byrd and was a member of the Baptist faith. Charles retired from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center, after 35 years of service. He was an avid fisherman and bowler, who bowled a perfect 300 game! But, what he enjoyed most was spending time with his family and grandchildren.
Charles is survived by his wife of 58 years, Regina Byrd, of Athens; sons, Gary Byrd and his wife, Sandy of Monroe and Jeff Byrd and his fianceé, Shell Withers of Hartwell; brothers, Bobby Byrd and his wife, Linda of Athens and Tommy Byrd of Vidalia; sister, Carolyn Hyatt of Athens; grandchildren, Amanda Byrd of Bostwick, Emily Byrd of Monroe and Lauren Withers of Hartwell, several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
