Dorine Marie Larmee Burkhard died Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the age of 94. She was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan to William O. T. and Mary Lucile (Cooper) Larmee. She graduated from Ann Arbor High School and obtained a Bachelors degree in Physical Education with a Minor in Math and Science at the University of Michigan. After graduation, she was employed as the Recorder for the Horace A. Rackham Graduate School where she met her future husband, Donald George Burkhard. While Donald pursued his Ph.D. in Physics, Dorine returned to the classroom to earn her teaching certificate. Dorine and Donald were married in 1948. A year later, Dr. Burkhard received his Ph.D. degree and the couple moved to Boulder, Colorado where Dr. Burkhard became a professor of Physics at the University of Colorado. In Colorado, Dorine taught physical education at Casey Junior High School until the birth of her first child in 1953. Dorine was active in the League of Women Voters, her sorority Alpha Delta Pi’s Alumnae Association, the YWCA, and the First Plymouth Congregational Church. In 1965, the family moved to Athens, Georgia where Dr. Burkhard became Head of the Physics Department at the University of Georgia. In Athens, Dorine was active in the League of Women Voters, tutored at Lyons Junior High School, and acquired a Masters degree in Counseling at the University of Georgia. After her children grew up and left home, she indulged in one of her many passions, traveling abroad to visit other cultures and explore beautiful gardens.
She is survived by her three children, Diane Burkhard of Athens, Donald Burkhard and wife Julie of Decatur, and Daryl Burkhard of Athens. She is also survived by her two granddaughters, Elizabeth Burkhard of Washington, D.C. and Katherine Sopp and husband Matt of Cleveland, Georgia, a great-granddaughter, Bennett Odette Sopp, a step-great-granddaughter, Parker Sopp, two sisters, Wilma McIntosh and husband George of Littleton, Colorado and Loretta Kozel of Leesburg, Florida, several nieces and nephews, and several great-nieces and great-nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 62 years, her sister and brother-in-law Mary Lou and Marvin Marsh and brother-in-law Frank Kozel.
A visitation will be held Sunday, September 16 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bernstein Funeral Home, 3195 Atlanta Hwy, Athens, Georgia 30606. The body will be cremated and the remains will be interred with her husband’s ashes in the Bethlehem Cemetery in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
In lieu of flowers, Dorine’s family kindly requests that contributions be made in her name to the Athens Area Emergency Food Bank, 640 Barber St., Athens, GA 30601.
