Doris Moore Childs

Mrs. Doris was born in Coffee County, AL on December 25, 1926, and was an Oconee County resident for over 60 years. She was the daughter of Obe and Julia Ramsey Moore and graduated from New Brockton High School in 1945. She had beautiful hands that were born to hold and love babies, shell peas, make cornbread, and fold the most perfect fitted bedsheet you’ve ever seen. She was a mother and homeMAKER. She taught us all how to love and what it meant to be loved. Once her children were in school, Mrs. Doris became a teacher’s aide in the Oconee County School System retiring after 20 years of service. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, GA.

Mrs. Childs was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Rex E. Childs. She is survived by her children, Mark (Kathy) Childs of Athens, GA, David (Lynne) Childs of Savannah, GA, Lynda Childs Dunlap of Watkinsville, GA, Laura Childs Ackerman (Jerry) of Winterville, GA. She was lovingly known as “Mama Childs” by her nine grandchildren, Brandi Childs Green (Chris), Jenifer Childs Shroads (Matt), Morgan Leigh Hall (Rhett), Adam Childs (Sarah), William Childs (Mary Cameron), Brian Dunlap, Caulder Harvill-Childs, Nathaniel McGrath, and Erin McGrath; great-grandchildren, Marley Ray, Rex Green, Betsy Hall, Emma Hall, Porter Shroads, Ollie Childs, Charlotte Shroads, Graves Childs, Rosemary Childs, and Lucy Childs. Also surviving is her sister, Marjorie Moore Watson of Enterprise, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held Friday, April 15, from 1:00 to 2:30 PM, at Bernstein Funeral Home followed by a private graveside service for the family with Rev. Matthew H. Marston officiating. Entombment will be in Evergreen Memorial Park.
