A father of 2 boys, he is succeeded by his eldest son, Gregory Scott Perry II of Beattyville, KY, wife Maria and four children Samuel, Tatiana, Lydia and Moses; his youngest son, Dr. Everett Leland Perry and wife Melissa Perry.
The second of 5 siblings, he spent his early years in central California, playing baseball, surfing, graduating high school from Monterey Bay Academy. Prior to completing his nursing license, he served as a medical missionary to Ethiopia. Upon returning, he went on to pursue a career as an anesthetist, graduating from Middle Tennessee School of Anesthesia (MTSA) and earning his license as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist.
Most of his work career was spent in Athens, GA, working 30+ years with Anesthesia Consultants of Athens, primarily at St. Mary’s Hospital in Athens, GA. He was able to spend his last two years of work mentoring his son, Dr. Everett Leland Perry.
A licensed Captain and open ocean sailor, he utilized his nautical skills to transport large sailboats from the greater Miami area to coastal Georgia and back. Most of his time on the ocean was spent as a recreational fishing Captain, navigating the sand bars and reefs of the Florida Keys for over 40 years, creating lasting memories of snorkeling and deep-sea fishing for family and friends while earning the fond nickname, “Captain Greg.”
That was not his only hobby, as he was also a musician. Having written hundreds of songs and selling some to recording artists, he formed the band “Greg and the Grunttones” named after the Florida Keys reef fish called a “grunt” by locals because of its grunting sound when pulled out of the water. The band won the 1999 Flagpole award for best traditional/roots rock. The band played at multiple Athens, GA venues, notably Allen’s, Nowhere Bar, DT’s Down Under and 40 Watt, just to name a few. They regularly drew large crowds from St. Mary’s Hospital, where most of the band members worked to support their music hobby.
He was a member of the Athens SDA church, where he served as Pathfinders director, mentoring youth for many years.
Following a prolonged battle with metastatic prostate cancer, Greg passed peacefully, comfortably and with superior care. The outpouring of love that he received from his many friends and family throughout was nothing short of incredible. Surrounded by friends and family, he passed peacefully on January 14, 2026.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 24, at 3:00 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home. Family and friends are invited to share words of remembrance at the service.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Bernstein Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
