

Athens,GA - Helen Darby Glenn Powell of Athens, GA, passed away at the
age of 88 on Wednesday, August 3, 2011.
A native of Mocksville, NC, Helen Darby was the daughter of the late Dr.
Thaddeus Lamar Glenn, Sr. and Margaret Alice Bachelor Glenn. She as
preceded in death by her devoted husband Franklin T. Powell and her
loving brother Dr. Thaddeus Lamar Glenn, Jr.
Helen Darby spent her childhood in North Carolina and Florida and had
lived primarily in Athens since 1938. She was a graduate of Athens High
and attended the University of Georgia where she earned a BS and MS
degree in Psychology. Helen Darby was a veteran of WW II having served
in the Navy as a nurse while stationed in Fort Worth, TX and Oakland,
CA. After her honorable discharge from the Navy, she worked at the VA
Hospital in Atlanta, GA and taught at College Avenue Elementary in
Athens. She also worked for the Northeast Georgia Council of The Girl
Scouts of America and was a beloved nurse in the office of her brother,
Dr. T. Lamar Glenn, Jr.
Helen Darby loved to cook, garden and travel, especially to the
mountains of north Georgia. She is remembered as being a genuinely kind
and loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother.
Helen Darby is survived by three sons, Carlton Powell and Lynda, Ila,
GA, Kenneth Powell, Athens, and Dr. Douglas Powell and Linda,
Greenwood, SC; five granddaughters, Julianne Powell, Athens, Anne
Powell, Norfolk, VA, and Elizabeth, Sarah Kate, and Mary Helen Powell,
Greenwood, SC; three grandsons, David Powell, Norfolk, VA, Harrison
Powell, Athens, and Franklin Powell, Greenwood, SC; as well as several
nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at the First Presbyterian Church, Athens, GA on Friday,
August 12, 2011 at 11:00 am with interment at Evergreen Memorial
Park. The family will receive family and guests in the First
Presbyterian Church Atrium beginning at 10:30 am prior to the funeral
service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Flower Fund of
