

He was born in Walhalla, S.C., on August 1, 1928, the son of the late Jess and Ruby Beatty Duncan. He married Annemarie Schaaf (Anne) on St. Patrick’s Day, 1956; they lived first in Asheville, N.C., and in Athens, GA since 1965.
He served his country during the Korean War as a Sergeant in the U.S. Army. He received the Korean Service Medal with three bronze service stars, and the Combat Infantry Badge. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 31 years as a plant pathologist. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Masonic Lodge #92 in Walhalla.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Anne, and his two children: Christopher Bryan Duncan (Chris) and his wife Lisa of Evans, GA; and Monika Riely and her husband Mark of Tucson, AZ. He is also survived by his granddaughter, Lindsay Duncan Waddell and her husband Kyle of Evans, GA.
Also surviving are his sisters Joanne D.Cox (Don) of Tamassee, S.C., Iris D.Duncan (Dennis) of Mountain Rest, Beth D. Ashley (Paul, dec.) of Westminster, and his sisters-in-law Bobbie Duncan and Viola Duncan of Walhalla. He is predeceased by his brothers, Harold V. Duncan, and Bruce Duncan, both of Walhalla.
Horace Duncan was a humble, honorable and dignified man. He loved nature, especially trees. He was an avid, talented and creative woodworker, and invented unique designs for “cleanable” birdhouses, and Lazy Susans with rails. His handcrafted furniture can be found in homes across the southeast. He was famed for his garden, especially for his tomatoes. He will be missed by his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held 11AM Tuesday, December 8th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10-11AM prior to the service.
