
Hugh Humphrey Armstrong III died suddenly at his home in Smyrna, GA in the early morning hours of January 7th, 2012. Hugh was born in Savannah, GA February 9th 1967. His father was the late Hugh H. Armstrong Jr. of Savannah, son of the late Hugh H Armstrong and Charlene Burke Armstrong of Savannah; and his mother, Caroline Gordon Armstrong, daughter of the late Hugh H Gordon and Mary Barrow Gordon of Danville, CA and Bluffton, SC.
In his early years he attended Savannah Country Day School, Christ School in Arden, NC, and graduated from Clarke Central High School in Athens, GA in 1985. He served as a corpsman in the navy from 1985 to 1988 primarily at the Marine Corps Training Station Paris Island, SC and in the naval hospital in Beaufort, SC.
Most of his life he spent all of his free time in Bluffton, SC on the May River both as a child and as an adult. His working life was spent in the mortgage business heading his own company with offices in Jacksonville and Sarasota, FL. More recently he worked with Vinnings Mortgage in Smyrna, GA and was currently employed by Foundation Financial in Smyrna. Although Hugh especially enjoyed cooking for family and friends, his first love was a good book (or a bad book, or a new book, or an old book).
He is survived by his beloved fiancé Beth Dupree of Athens, GA, his mother Caroline Gordon Armstrong of Bluffton, SC, his two sisters and their families; Mary Armstrong Dugas, her husband Patton and daughters Liv and Mollie, Caroline Armstrong Horsley, her husband Jeff, son William, and daughter Catherine. He also leaves behind his step-mother Jeanne Armstrong Seals, step-sister Lea Schneider Scarborough, step-brothers Ryan Schneider, Jay Schneider, their families and an extensive family circle in Savannah, Bluffton, and Athens including his aunt Kay Remion, her husband Chris, his uncle Hugh H. Gordon, his wife Lorraine, cousins Paul McCloskey, Hugh Gordon, and Christopher Gordon.
A memorial service will be held at Christ Church in Savannah on Wednesday, January the 11th at 11am with reception to follow at the church. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January the 14th at 11am at Oconee Hills Cemetery in Athens, GA.
