

James Edwin Hanks, Jr. (Jim) age 78, of Athens, GA, passed away peacefully while residing at The Orchard at Athens on Friday, May 2, 2025.
He was born in Anderson, SC, June 30, 1946. Jim Hanks, was the son of the late James Edwin Hanks, Sr. and Janie Ruth McClellan of Anderson, SC. He was a graduate of TL Hanna High School, Anderson College and the University of Georgia.
He was a lifelong teacher, travel enthusiast and lover of history and antiques. Jim retired as the Career and Vocational Director for the Clarke County School District after 36 years in education. In his retirement he focused on his passion for travel and antiques.
He is survived by his children, James Edwin Hanks III (Katie), Jane Ellen Hanks Torbit (Hugh) and Julie Elizabeth Hanks Marsh (Eddie). He always looked forward to visits from his three granddaughters, Amelia, Caroline and Addie Hanks. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Bonnie Kay Davis Hanks.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Orchard along with Agape Hospice for all they did for Jim.
The family requests that any memorials be made to Extra Special People, Watkinsville, GA.
A private graveside service will be held at Oconee Hill Cemetery.
