A native of Athens, he was the son of the late John Howard and Pat Johnson and was also preceded in death by his brothers Johnny and Steve Johnson. Phil was one of the founders of Hope Haven School, worked at Normal News, and was publisher of “The Athens Sports Scene.” He was an avid bowler and collector of animatronics and post cards.
Phil loved everyone he met and he returned that love tenfold, brightening everybody’s day with a handshake for men and a kiss on the hand for the ladies.
Survivors include sisters: Ellen, Sarah, Jan and Robin; brothers: Dan, Tim and Carl, nieces and nephews: Betsy, Ben, Sarah, Haley, Amble, Jessica, Ed and Sam.
Graveside services will be 1pm Thursday, Sept 4th at Evergreen Memorial Park with Ed Saye officiating.
