

Joanna was born at home in Athens, GA on South Pope Street on June 14, 1930. She married Andrew James Burton, Jr. on May 13, 1961. An avid Bulldog and Braves fan, Joanna was a true Southern lady and a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. Joanna had a strong Christian faith which guided her throughout her life.
She was the youngest child of Otis and Mary Head Bridges. She was predeceased by her husband, Andy, and by her siblings, Mary Alice Morton, Ruth Mann, John Bridges, and Helen Bridges.
Joanna is survived by her two sons, Andrew James Burton, III (Jay) and his wife, Sylvia, and Thomas Ashley Burton (Tab) and his wife, Ann. Also surviving are her grandchildren, Andrew J. Burton V (Drew), Megan M. Cox (Mitchell), and Anastasia N. Burton. She is also survived by a nephew, niece, and a great-nephew and great-niece.
She was a longtime member of Friendship Christian Church on Tallassee Road, Athens. She recently moved to Florida to be near family.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, October 22 at 3 p.m. at the chapel of Bernstein Funeral Home. Visitation will be held from 2-3 p.m., prior to the service.
Joanna has requested that no flowers be sent. In lieu of flowers, she wished that each person make an individual decision with regards to honoring her memory.
