Judith Harrold Schneider

Judith was born in Athens, Georgia on August 29, 1937 and she passed away after a short illness on January 11, 2023 in St. Louis, MO. Judith’s parents (Thomas Harrold, PhD and Virginia Harrold) were both scholars and taught at the University of Georgia. Judith was raised with three brothers: Mike, Bert and Tom Harrold, Jr. and the family lived on Milledge Terrace. With other family members close by, Judith loved to play with her cousins, Robin Benson and Marie Moran and she enjoyed many long and laughter filled phone conversations with them later in her life.

Judith graduated from Athens High School in 1955 and Agnes Scott College in 1959. She continued her studies at Emory University and received a Master’s Degree in Library Science in 1961. In 1969 Judith married the love of her life, Dennis Schneider and they were happy together until his death in 1992.

Judith was blessed with two children, Virginia (Jennie) Kimmel and Matthew (Matt) Tyler and grandson, Davis Tyler. She was a caring and concerned mother who instilled a love of reading in both of her children.

Judith loved to travel, read novels, study the Bible and work with children. She had many friends, and these relationships were dear to her. Her brother Tom Harrold Jr. made many of her travel dreams come true and brought so much light and adventure to her life.

Judith will be missed by many, but none more than by her family, including her beloved nieces and nephews: Brad Harrold, Lisa Pace, Jeff Harrold, Kim Lawrence, and Beth Ratchford. She was a stalwart presence in their lives, and was much loved and admired.

A graveside memorial service for Judith will be held Saturday, April 29, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. at Oconee Hill Cemetery, with Rev. Jeremy Lawson officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 North Lumpkin Street, Athens, Georgia 30601.
