LaLa was born November 11, 1970, to Roslyn Edwina Houston Brookshire “Punkin” and Clayton Wells Moore. She graduated from Charlotte Country Day in 1989 and went on to attend The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where she was a proud member of the Chi Omega sorority.
It was at Carolina that LaLa met the love of her life, Joseph Frierson III. They were married in Charlotte, NC on August 10, 1996, celebrating the day with cherished friends, family, and Liquid Pleasure.
La earned a Master’s degree in School Counseling from Georgia State University in 1997. She worked as a school counselor at Morningside Elementary School and Barnett Shoals Elementary School for several years before becoming a mother. She loved providing comfort and making a difference in the lives of so many children facing difficult home environments.
LaLa was deeply involved in her community, volunteering for over two decades at Butterfly Dream Farms, an equine therapy facility for developmentally challenged children. She was a member of the Junior Ladies Garden Club. Lisa was a founding member of the Not Parents Weekend Parents Weekend, UNC’s premier social event for middle-aged Tar Heels pretending they are still in college. She was also a member of Cheech House, a community passionately dedicated to Carolina Basketball, Leroy, and depravity.
LaLa treasured her enduring friendships with extraordinary people from every stage of her life—Atlanta, Charlotte, Chapel Hill and Athens.
Growing up near Chastain Stables in Atlanta, she developed a passion for horses, including clandestine midnight rides across Chastain’s golf course. Later in life, she pursued every opportunity to ride, with her girlfriends or her family out west.
Lisa is survived by her husband of 30 years, Joseph Cunningham Frierson, III; her children, Lucy Clayton Frierson, Joseph Cunningham Frierson IV, and Jane Ison Frierson; her father, Clay Moore, her stepmother, Carol Moore, and her stepfather, Stan Brookshire. She is also survived by her half-sister Casey Moore, stepsister Kathy Brown, sister Roslyn Moore; nieces Willa Frierson and Harriet Brown, and nephews Jack Jaegers, Henry Frierson, and Wyly Brown. She is also survived by her two devoted, but atrociously-behaved dogs, Dexter and Maye.
After four years of exceptional medical care, the family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Petros Nikolinakos and the dedicated nurses and staff at the University Blood and Cancer Center. And a special thank you to caregivers Karen Waller, Everneda Moore and Jennifer Jones, as well as Family Hospice, who provided Lisa such compassionate care during her final weeks.
A memorial celebration will be held at Athens First United Methodist Church on Thursday, January 8, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Betsy Butler officiating. The family requests attendees wear Carolina Blue. Following the service, the family will welcome friends and loved ones at the Athens Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to The Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 49309, Athens, GA 30604. www.cancerfoundationofnega.org/
