Marshall Frederick Cartledge

A native of Lincoln County, GA, Mr. Cartledge was the son of the late Percy Rosser Cartledge and Cornelia Pope Cartledge and was preceded in death by his first wife, Lila Holliday Cartledge. He attended Washington-Wilkes Elementary School and graduated from Athens High. Mr. Cartledge received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree and a Bachelor of Science degree in physics from the University of Georgia. He served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Ordananceman.

He was a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, The American Legion, The NRA, The American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, The Georgia Sheriffs Association. He helped many through his work at The Athens Area Commencement Center.

Marsh later joined Underwater Research in Orlando, Florida advancing on to working for the U.S. Government at Eglin Air Force base in Fort Walton Beach Florida, where he worked with the rocket and missile program. One of the most notable was the development of a device to measure the parameters of a nuclear fireball. He was also prominent in cannon ammo. All this time, Marsh was developing an archeological site, the Indian Temple Mound in Ft. Walton Beach Florida, now a museum. He was developing a theory that the Maya Indians had moved from Mexico to the southeast.

He is survived by his wife, Linda Woods Cartledge of 26 years; daughters, Lila Annulet Cartledge of Irmo, SC , Marsha Cartledge Chandler Violini and husband Giuseppe of Blairsville, GA; grandson, Nathaniel Chandler (Jessica) of Blairsville, GA; step-sons, Edsel Holt and wife, Demi and John Holt and wife, Toni all of Atlanta, and sister, Carol Cartledge of Washington, GA.

A memorial service will be held 2PM Friday, January 10th in the chapel at Bernstein Funeral Home with Rev Crist Camden officiating.
