

Born in Athens, she was the daughter of the late Dr. James J. McDonald Sr. and Joan Zellars McDonald. In addition to her parents, Mary Beth was preceded in death by a brother, Bobby McDonald and a baby sister, Rebecca McDonald.
Mary Beth grew up in Athens, attending Athens High School and the University of Georgia, where she graduated in 1970. She was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority while at UGA.
Mary Beth married Mallie Clark Fain III with whom she had two children, Joan McDonald Fain and Mallie Clark Fain IV.
In her early postgraduate years, she co-owned and operated The Bridal Gallery in Athens. An active member of the community, Mary Beth was a member of the Athens Junior Assembly, served on the Athens Regional Development Council and helped organize the idea and raise money for the guesthouses and the Loran Smith Center for Cancer Support at Athens Regional Medical Center. She started the Love and Laughter program for cancer patients and their families and was a member of the board of Camp Sunshine for a number of years.
Additionally, Mary Beth was a leader and participated for many years in community Bible study groups. She assisted in fundraising for the Vince Dooley Scholarship Fund at the UGA Library and was a recipient of the J.W. Fanning Humanitarian Award at Athens Regional Medical Center. The award recognizes people who have high personal values in their lives while making significant contributions to the hospital through their time, interests and commitment to the medical center, and community it serves.
In addition to her children, Joan and Clark, Mary Beth is survived by her brother, James J. McDonald Jr. and his wife, Dina; niece, Miriam McDonald Metcalf; nephew, James Jackson McDonald III; and two grandchildren, Mallie Clark Fain V “Mac” and Mason Charles Fain.
A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date. Burial was private.
