Maxine was born October 22, 1935 in Glennville, Georgia, the daughter of Lee and Ollie Mae Kicklighter. Growing up on a large South Georgia farm, playing with six brothers and sisters, and visiting the family coast cabin at Shellman Bluff were highlights of Maxine’s childhood.
Maxine attended South Georgia State College and completed her education at the University of Georgia where she was a member of the Redcoat Band Georgettes. She also was a member of the Tridelta sorority and remained active in involvement with them for many years serving as the House Corporation President. She remained a loyal Bulldog fan throughout her entire life volunteering her help for the UGA tennis team during the NCAA tournaments and attending as many sports events as possible.
Maxine devoted much time to community activities including opening and operating a nursery school at Tuckston United Methodist Church for many years. She volunteered service on the YWCO Board and the Salvation Army. She belonged to an Athens bridge club for over 40 years and loved her Athens Country Club tennis team. She also adored gardening and arranged flowers for many events held by friends.
A special thank you goes to all of the loving individuals who cared for Maxine at St. Mary’s Highland Hills Memory Care Center.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, September 30, 2017 at 12:00 p.m. at the Athens First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in the John Wesley Parlor after the service.
