

Robert Barnett “Bob” Cunningham, 73, passed away peacefully at his home in Athens, Georgia on Monday, May 12, 2025. He was born on December 6, 1951, in Athens, Georgia to the late WT and Mary Cunningham.
Bob grew up in Lexington, Georgia on his family farm. As a young boy he enjoyed the country life, which began his love for the outdoors. Bob enjoyed riding horses, tending cattle and hunting wild game. After graduating from Oglethorpe County High School, Bob went on to attend the University of Georgia. He was a proud member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity where he developed many lifelong friendships. During this time, he was given the nickname, “Country” which he carried with him throughout his life.
Bob frequently shared his affection for close friends and family by giving nicknames that uniquely matched a pastime of their conversation or relationship. Bob’s wife, Ellen, must hold the record for most nicknames as she was last referred to as “Talking.”
Upon graduation, he began his career with National Gypsum as Sales Representative. His 40 years of success stemmed from a strong work ethic and unwavering dedication. He was respected by his peers and colleagues. During this time, he met and married his lovely wife, Ellen Short Cunningham.
Bob was a faithful husband, a loving father and a devoted friend to many. Bob could light up a room with his boisterous laugh and his genuine smile. Many enjoyed his knack for storytelling. A friend to all, Bob was kind, dependable and trustworthy.
He was an active and dedicated member of Athens First United Methodist Church where he was a member of the Tuck Sunday School Class. He enjoyed being a member of Athens Country Club and Athens City Club.
Bob is survived by his wife of 37 years, Ellen Short Cunningham, and their children: William Tolliver “Will” Cunningham and fiancée, Sarah “Madison” Jones, and “John” Lafayette Cunningham. Survivors also include many nieces, nephews and cousins. He is also survived by his brother, William Tolliver Cunningham (Cassie) and his uncle, Robert Barnett (Mary). He was preceded in death by his parents, WT and Mary Cunningham, as well as his nephew, Jason Cunningham.
A memorial service is scheduled for Monday, May 19, 2025, at 1:00 p.m., at Athens First United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends in Hancock Hall following the service.

The family wishes to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Petros Nikolinakos and the dedicated nurses and staff at the University Blood and Cancer Center for four years of exceptional medical treatment. And a special thank you to Dr. R. Patrick Lucas who provided Bob with such compassionate care.
