Robert "Bobby" E. Gibson

Robert Gibson, 89, of Athens passed away on Friday, November 10, 2017. He was born on February 6, 1928 to Geneva McLeroy and Carl E. Gibson. Reared in Athens, Bobby graduated from Athens High School and attended the University of Georgia. Upon completing his undergraduate degree, he went on to attend the UGA School of Law, and became a partner at Erwin, Epting, Gibson and McLeod.

He married Sylvia Mathis in August of 1962 at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Athens, Georgia.

Mr. Gibson was instrumental in the revival of Athens Historical Society in 1959. For many years, was a member, then president of the Board of Trustees at Oconee Hill Cemetery, and was a faithful and devoted member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, where he served many years on the Endowment Board and the Architecture and Memorials Board.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George Gibson; his sister, Elizabeth Rast Stephenson; and George’s son, Andy, and is survived by his wife of 55 years, Sylvia Gibson.
