A native of Athens, Mr. Hughes was the son of the late John Frank and Veronica Deitz Hughes. He was a retired self-employed painting contractor and enjoyed car shows, especially antique cars. Most of all, he loved spending time with his granddaughter, Lexi.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Hughes was preceded in death by a brother, Alan Hughes, and a sister, Mary Perry.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores Hale Hughes; daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Craig Sampson; granddaughter, Lexi Sampson; sisters: Margaret Chancey and Cindy Childs; brother, Jeff Hughes; and brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Janet Hale.
The family will receive friends Friday, April 4, from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., at Bernstein Funeral Home. Following the visitation, a graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., in Oconee Memorial Park in Watkinsville with Pastor John David Smith officiating.
