

Colonel Edward Sandford Joiner, born on December 23, 1930, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on the morning of November 2, 2025. Edward is survived by his son, Russ Joiner; his daughter, Deborah Joiner; and his grandsons, Dillon and Nicholas Joiner. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ann Wright Joiner, with whom he founded a successful interior design company in Hilton Head, SC, after retiring from the military.
Raised by his mother, Verlyn “Mimi” Moore, after losing his father as a young child, Edward grew up alongside his now-deceased sister, Ann McLeod. After grade school, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology before answering his call to serve in the military. Throughout his life, he remained grounded and guided by his faith in Jesus Christ and the teachings of the Holy Bible.
A dedicated Air Force fighter pilot and squadron commander, Edward served his country with honor and distinction for nearly 30 years. He was awarded numerous medals and accreditations throughout his career as a pilot and squadron leader, including the Legion of Merit, reflecting his exceptional service and leadership. He fought in Vietnam and was stationed around the world throughout his career; Spain and Thailand were among his favorite stations.
In his leisure time, Edward enjoyed boating and playing tennis, as well as engaging in board and card games with his friends and family. He especially loved playing a competitive game of bridge with his friends. Accompanied by a good glass of wine, these activities brought him much joy and relaxation.
Edward will be laid to rest beside his wife, Ann, in Six Oaks Cemetery in Hilton Head, SC. A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 14, at 12 p.m. A visitation service will be held at H.M. Patterson & Son Funeral Home in Brookhaven on Sunday, November 9, from 1–3 p.m. Condolences to the family may be directed to the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to your favorite veterans’ charity.
Colonel Edward Sandford Joiner will be remembered as a man of courage and faith who lived a life of service, love, and joy.
