Elizabeth Yates Chalmers, 90, died in her sleep at the William Bremen Jewish Home on April 9, 2011. Elizabeth was called “Buba” all her life after her younger brother, Wilson, was not at first able to say her name. The beauty of her countenance was a reflection of her natural inner beauty and grace. Words frequently used to describe her were “kind” and “sweet”. She was full of life and joy. She had a gift for enjoying the small moments in life. She knew how to slow down and smell the roses and wonder at the beauty around her. She loved to dance and to play tennis and was wonderful at both. She also loved the beach and Pawley’s Island, in particular. She was very supportive of each of her five children and spent countless hours at music and dance recitals, swim meets, track meets, basketball games, football games, and soccer games.
She graduated from high school at Mount Zion Institute in Winnsboro, SC, and then from Converse College in 1942, where she was the May Queen.
In 1947 she moved with her husband, Dr Rives Chalmers, to Atlanta and remained here the rest of her life. She was active in the community in the following areas: National Association for Mental Health, Project HOPE, Family and Child Service, Auxiliary to the Medical Association of Atlanta, Inc, Auxiliary of Henrietta Egleston Hospital for Children, Easter Seals, League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts of America, Margaret Mitchell Elementary School PTA, Northside Garden Club, and was a founding member of the Financial Forum investment club. She sold real estate for several years with Nelson Realty and Harry Norman Realty.
She is mourned and survived by her husband, Dr Rives Chalmers; her children and their spouses, Alice Gordon Chalmers, Ann and Rives Chalmers, Beth and George Thornton, Dana and Pat Pittard, Lisa and David Chalmers; her grandchildren and their spouses, Alex Chalmers, Ashley and John Chalmers, Jennifer Chalmers, Darcey and Paul Mullis, Ben Thornton, Leigh Pittard, Cole and Zack Deming, Brett Jamison , Marshall Chalmers, Elizabeth and Chris McGanity; and her great grandchildren, Avery Chalmers, Aine and Asher Mullis.
Funeral services will be at St Luke’s Episcopal Church on Thursday, April 14, at 1:00 PM. A reception at the church will follow. Interment will be at the Rives family cemetery in Charlottesville, VA. Please send contributions in her name to the national Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers. .
