

MEARS, Elizabeth Barry. Elizabeth Barry Mears a resident of Atlanta, GA, died on March 5, 2018 after a brief illness. She was born on December 18, 1928 in Boston, Massachusetts to Anna Miller Barry and John Patrick Barry (both from Boston, MA). She attended the Girls’ Latin School and Katherine Gibbs both located in Boston MA. She enjoyed playing the piano which she learned at the age of 5 and continued on through adulthood; most recently entertaining her neighbors at Canterbury Court. Tennis was her favorite pastime and she enjoyed playing league tennis in the 13 different locations that she called home during her married life.
Before her marriage, she worked for several law firms before becoming executive secretary to Judge Francis J. W. Ford, a Federal judge based in Boston, MA. Mrs. Mears participated in many civic activities including garden clubs (president), volunteering in the gift shops at Christ Church in Old Towne Alexandria, VA and St. Philips Cathedral in Atlanta, and teaching under-privileged children how to read in New Orleans, where she was also a docent at Longue Vue House and Gardens.
Mrs. Mears is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Otho Frederick Mears III. Mrs. Mears is survived by two sons, John Barry Mears of Atlanta (wife Molly) and Otho Frederick Mears IV of Nashville (wife Marie-Claire), and 5 grandchildren, Emily, Jack, Madeleine, Warren, and Grace Mears who loved their "Bootie.” There will be an informal visitation at the home of John and Molly Mears (2625 Rivers Road, Atlanta, GA) on Saturday, March 17th from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. A private family service will be held at 3 o'clock on Saturday, March 17th at All Saints' Episcopal Church (634 West Peachtree St., Atlanta, GA).
