Emily Anderson Hightower, 95, a native of Atlanta, died March 13, 2017. Mrs. Hightower was born September 24, 1921. She was predeceased by her parents, Theodosia Willingham Anderson and William Willis Anderson, and her only brother William (Bill) Anderson of Atlanta. She was the widow of George Bedney Hightower. She is survived by her daughters, Mrs. Parks Redwine (Emily) of Atlanta and Mrs. Richard Patterson (Georgia) of Athens, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Emily was deeply respected for her encyclopedic knowledge of a staggering number of friends, all their families and their relationships. People thought she knew everyone in the city of Atlanta. Her sense of humor and creativity made virtually every encounter with her a memorable delight. She enjoyed her friends and especially her memberships in several groups including the Wednesday Ladies and the Friday ladies with whom she had shared lunch since her college days. She had been very active in All Saints Episcopal Church. She and her husband, George, taught Sunday School there for twenty years and she was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary. She also enjoyed her membership in the Colonial Dames of America, The Piedmont Hospital Auxiliary and the Junior League of Atlanta. She was a member of the Piedmont Driving Club.
Emily attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College where she was a member of Phi Mu sorority. She later graduated from Agnes Scott College. She was an active member of the Every Saturday Club for whom she wrote many research papers. She was also the author of a number of humorous skits as a member of the Egleston Children’s Hospital Auxiliary.
A great delight in her later years was the close, thoughtful and attentive companionship of her good friend from childhood, John Codington, with whom she gardened, enjoyed music and laughed constantly. The family extends its deep appreciation to the staff of Lenbrook-Atlanta and especially to the incredibly kind employees of Menders, Inc.: Bertha Brown, Monique Cover, Linder Davis and Stephanie Pettway. Their professionalism and thoughtful, dignified kindness to Emily will never be forgotten.
A memorial service for Mrs. Hightower will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church, Atlanta, on April 6, 2017 at 2 P.M.
Interment at Westview Cemetery will be private. H. M. Patterson and Son is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory consider a gift to Hospice Atlanta, 5775 Glenridge Dr. NE, Suite E200, Atlanta, GA 30328.
