Frank Slover, a devoted family man, esteemed legal professional, and beloved friend to many, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loved ones on April 17, 2023. Born on April 20, 1945, in Ottawa, Canada, to Lawrence and Mona Slover, Frank's relentless pursuit of knowledge, one-of-a-kind sense of humor, and never-ending devotion to his friends and family left a lasting impact on the lives of all those who knew him.
Frank grew up a particularly proud Canadian, often telling stories of trudging through the snow to walk to school with his sister Anne in Ottawa (this may be why he spent the latter half of his life in the warmth of Atlanta, Georgia). An excellent student, Frank was always at the top of his class while simultaneously helping out and working at the family department store, Slover’s, in downtown Ottawa.
Demonstrating a dedication to higher education that would become a hallmark of his life, Frank's collegiate journey began at McGill University, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree with honors. After various stints of work and escapades living and motorcycling through Europe, he then went on to acquire three Master's degrees: an MBA from the University of Michigan, an MS in Journalism from Kansas University, and a JD from Georgia State University College of Law.
Frank’s career was vast, varied, and impressive. He was a financial/business writer for The Gazette (Montreal) and The Globe and Mail (Toronto) and served as Director of Corporate Communications for Georgia-Pacific Corporation. While working, Frank attended law school at night, graduating top of his class in 1985 and passing the Georgia Bar Exam soon after. He went on to practice commercial real estate and business law for 30 years until his retirement as a Senior Partner from Seyfarth Shaw LLP in 2014. His colleagues remember him fondly as a sharp and precise thinker, a skilled negotiator, and someone who could always break the tension in the room with a well-timed joke.
After he retired, Frank’s generosity and legal skills led him to serve as a pro bono lawyer for Atlanta Legal Aid, where he represented numerous at-need individuals and families who were unable to pay legal fees. Frank was also a tireless advocate on behalf of the Georgia State Law School through his tenure as the class representative on the Law Alumni Council and the firm liaison for the Law Firm Campaign. Additionally, Frank was one to never miss an alumni gathering — be it alumni receptions, reunions, President’s Society, just to name a few.
Frank’s generosity to the next generation of legal students continued as he provided the funding for the construction of a new law building at Georgia State. The Frank Slover Seminar Room exists today as evidence of his unwavering commitment. When the college needed funding to provide scholarships to its students, Frank, again, never wavered. He supported the Dean’s Scholarship Fund for many years before endowing his own scholarship - the Frank Slover Family Endowed Scholarship.
Frank's true legacy, however, lies in the love and devotion he shared with his family. A beloved husband, brother, father, stepfather, uncle, and grandfather, Frank is survived by his loving wife, Deborah, who brought joy and happiness to his later years; his sister Anne Cheesman; his former spouse, Merrill Fraser, and their three children, Sidney Slover (Kelly Comiskey), Amy Slover, and Sam Slover; and his grandson, Lawrence Slover, who will carry forward the Slover name and the lessons of kindness, intellectual curiosity, and humor that Frank so profoundly embodied.
He is also survived by his niece Jennifer Hartman and her children Rachael and Nathan; nephew Simon Cheesman; stepson Mitchell Thoreson (Tiffany Thoreson) and their children Madelyn, William, and Wesley; and stepson Andrew Thoreson (Laura Thoreson).
Those who knew Frank Slover will perhaps remember him best for his wit, penchant for good times, and classic sense of humor that was truly one-of-a-kind. He always left his friends, family, and colleagues with a smile on their faces and the lasting feeling that they had just enjoyed time with a person who truly cared about them. He was a great man who will be dearly missed and remembered with love and admiration.
In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that donations be made in Frank's memory to the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation:
