
George F. Smith, Jr., age 93, of Atlanta, Georgia passed away February 19, 2018. George was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 18, 1924 to the late Irene Gordon Smith and the late George Frederick (Fred) Smith. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Jane Irvin Smith and his daughter Sloan. George grew up in Atlanta and graduated from Tech High School in 1942. From there, he went on to Georgia Tech and graduated from the Navy’s officer’s candidate program in 1945. He immediately went to serve on a Destroyer in the Pacific for the remainder of WWII and later served in Korea and the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander. George had a 35 year career at George F. Richardson Company ultimately becoming President and co-owner. George was an avid golfer and a member of the Atlanta Athletic Club and the Atlanta Rotary Club. He also enjoyed hunting, gardening and anything to do with Georgia Tech. He continued to cheer on the Yellow Jackets at football and basketball games even during his final year of life, many times with his grandson, a fellow Tech graduate. Most of all, George loved his family and was affectionately called “Pop” by them all. He lovingly raised and lived with his daughter Sloan who had Downs Syndrome until her passing in 2011. George is survived by his sister Jean Smith McCall; his son George F. (Chip) Smith III, wife Helen and their children Jenna Ramsey (Hagan), Drew Smith and Clay Smith; his son James Bradford (Brad) Smith, wife Jodi and their children Luke Smith and Hamp Smith. The service celebrating the life of George will be held on Friday, February 23rd at 3:00pm at Johns Creek Presbyterian Church.
