

Henry Thomas Rogers, Sr., 89, of Dunwoody, Georgia passed away March 30, 2011 due to complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was born January 4, 1922 in Maysville, Georgia, and moved at an early age to Atlanta. He graduated from Boys High School, Emory University and Georgia State University. Henry served during World War II in the Army Air Force, training at Turner Field in Albany, Georgia, where he met his future wife, Mary Helen Sperry. He was trained as a B-24 pilot. Staying in the reserves, he and his unit, the 425th Transportation Group, were recalled to active duty and served in Korea from 1950-1952. There he was promoted to Captain. His business experience includes nine years at Dun & Bradstreet and thirty one years at J. M. Tull Metals as Credit Manager and Treasurer. He was a longtime member and past president of the Southeast Credit Management Association and the Atlanta Credit Club. His community involvement included membership in the Kiwanis Club of Atlanta for over 30 years. Henry was active most of his life, enjoying boating and fishing, gardening, foreign travel and tennis. He especially enjoyed hosting his family and friends at the annual Fourth of July picnic at the Atlanta Athletic Club. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Helen Sperry Rogers; one son, Henry Thomas Rogers, Jr. and his wife, June Stephens Rogers; two daughters, Gayle Rogers Tallman and her husband Dr. James Tallman, and Helen Rogers and her partner Sally Eidson. There are five grandchildren: June Rogers Cathey and her husband The Reverend Dr. Ben Cathey; Lt Col Henry Thomas Rogers, III and his wife Sandra Rogers; Anna Tallman Deriso and her husband Walter Deriso, III; Frank Tallman and his wife Tricia Tallman; and Martha Tallman and her fiancé Jon Horn. There are ten great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at Dunwoody United Methodist Church on Sunday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m. The family will receive visitors at the church before the service from 3:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Dunwoody United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.
