Jacquelyn “Jackie” Josey Hahne of Atlanta passed away on April 23, 2025 at the age of 92. The third child of Madge Speir Josey and William Ellis Josey, Jr., Jackie was born on December 30,1932 in Bartow (Jefferson County), Georgia.
After attending elementary and middle school in Bartow and Louisville, GA, Jackie was sent to Atlanta to board at North Avenue Presbyterian School (which would later become The Westminster Schools). Following high school, she attended Agnes Scott College, where she served as president of her class during her junior year and earned a BA in Biology in 1954.
Her wide-ranging work and volunteer history reflected the breadth of her interests. For a time she was a lab technician in the Biochemistry Department at Emory University and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. During her first marriage, she was primarily a homemaker and mother to her three children. She also worked in banking and volunteered for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, where she was on the Junior Committee. She married John Russell “Russ” Hahne in 1987, and they happily lived on St. Simons Island until his death in 1997, after which she returned to Atlanta. In 2016 she moved into St. Anne’s Terrace, where she wrote a monthly column called “Getting to Know You.”
Throughout her life she remained a loyal member of the Agnes Scott Alumnae Association and was a member of the History Study Club, two monthly book clubs, a Life Member of the Piedmont Hospital Auxiliary, and member of Trinity Presbyterian Church, where she was a Circle Leader, a Stephen Minister, and a member of the Activity and Planning Committee.
Jackie enjoyed cooking and entertaining friends, but above all she loved books — reading books, buying books, selling books, talking about books. She worked at bookstores on St. Simons and in Atlanta for more than a decade and volunteered at the Cathedral Bookstore for another six years. Again, her taste was broad and deep: she had as much time for William Faulkner and Flannery O’Connor as she did John Grisham. Among her favorite questions was, “What have you been reading?”
Jackie treasured her many friendships developed over the last 9 years at Saint Anne’s Terrace. She loved the conversations, day trips, meals, and fellowship of her neighbors and the staff at Saint Anne’s.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Russell Hahne; and her two brothers, Dr. William Ellis Josey, III and Dr. John Speir Josey. She is survived by her children, Harry Ellis “Hank” Hall (Allison), Caroline Hall Knight, and Nancy Hall Guritz. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Jordan Hall (Emily), Lindsay Hall Agnew (Davis), Julien Knight, Patrick Knight (Ellie), Connors Knight, Caroline “Callie” Guritz, and Ellis Guritz; great-grandchildren, Mary Lu Hall and Leland Hall; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. She is also survived by her beloved sisters-in-law, Leigh Strubing Josey, Lola Robuck Josey, and Elizabeth “Lib” Grafton Greer. Jackie’s family thanks Toyve Carter for her care during her last months. The family extends a special thanks to her friend and caretaker, Eunice Cooper, for her love and care.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Trinity Presbyterian Church, 3003 Howell Mill Road, at 2:00 PM, on Wednesday, May 21. A reception will follow.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to Agnes Scott College, Trinity Presbyterian Church, Saint Anne’s Terrace, or a charity of your choice.
