Dr. Joyce D. Gryboski of Tequesta, FL, formerly of New Britain, CT, died peacefully visiting her sons in Atlanta, Georgia on September 14, 2017. She was born in Jersey City, New Jersey on November 7, 1932. Joyce graduated from Smith College and went on to receive her medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency and chief residency at Yale, practiced medicine at Yale and was promoted to professor in 1979.
Joyce was one of the true pioneers of females in medicine. As a researcher, she helped lay the foundations upon which the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology was developed. Joyce was a clinician, an educator and a scholar. Her reputation as the leading authority in Pediatric Gastroenterology led her to treat patients from all over the world. Joyce authored a pioneering paper which documented the identifying characteristics of Crohn's disease in children. She served on various National Institute of Health panels and in 1996 Joyce won the Schwachman Award as a leading scholar in the field of Pediatric Gastroenterology.
One of her great accomplishments was the publication in 1975 of the single-authored textbook entitled "Gastrointestinal Problems in the Infant". The task of writing this comprehensive text is even more impressive when one realizes it was written at home on a typewriter and at a time before electronic Medline searches were possible. This text was one of the first and leading efforts to chronicle the rapidly progressing field of Pediatric Gastroenterology in the late 1960s and 1970s.
As much as Joyce loved practicing medicine, cooking and travel, her top priority was always her family. No one was ever more important to Joyce than her three sons and her late husband of 47 years, Dr. William Gryboski, whom she met while registering for her first year at Yale Medical School and who predeceased Joyce in 2003.
Joyce is survived by her three sons and their wives -- William and Dr. Stacy Gryboski, Dr. David and Ruthie Gryboski, and Thomas and Kasey Gryboski, all of Atlanta, GA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Will, Daly, Jack, Kate, Christopher, Daisy and Allie. A family service will be held in Atlanta. In lieu of flowers the family requests that contributions be made in support of Surgical Oncology at Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, 1762 Clifton Rd. NE, Suite 1400, Atlanta, GA 30322
