

Juan Mauricio Ramos Avila, devoted and loving husband to Michael Taylor, and a cherished friend to all who knew him, died unexpectedly on May 13, 2016, in his beloved home of Atlanta, Georgia. Mauricio was born in Leon, Mexico on April 21, 1987 to his father, Fermin Ramos Lopez, and his mother, Juana Avila Velazquez. Mauricio spent his early years in Leon before moving to the United States and eventually settling in Atlanta.
Preceded in death by his father and his younger sister, Gaby, Mauricio is survived by his husband, Michael; Mother, Juana Avila Velazquez; sisters, Carol and Rita; brothers, Martin and Nick; parents-in-law Mark and Betsy Taylor; and numerous cherished nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his dog, Charlie, whom he adored.
Mauricio had a kind and gentle soul, was full of compassion toward others, and was loved by all who knew him. Mauricio moved to Atlanta in 2009 and met his future husband Michael soon after. Michael and Mauricio were married in Manchester, New Hampshire on November 1, 2013. Mauricio and Michael loved to spend time together and travel – visiting 42 states. Mauricio’s favorite places to visit included New York City, Boston, Savannah, Key West, and Seattle.
Mauricio loved Atlanta and the spirt of community found within the city. No matter where he traveled, Mauricio told others how proud he was to call Atlanta home. Mauricio enjoyed Piedmont Park, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the Atlanta History Center, the Carter Center, Falcons games, and all the growth and development occurring in his Midtown neighborhood. On the weekends, Mauricio and Michael enjoyed exploring different neighborhoods within the city as well as traveling to the North Georgia Mountains for hiking and sightseeing.
Mauricio cherished his family. He loved when his mother would come to Atlanta to visit and spend time with him. Mauricio and his sister Rita had a very special bond. His last trip was to Portland, Oregon to meet his sister Rita’s new baby Katherine. Mauricio and Michael were going to be Katherine’s godparents.
Mauricio was a brilliant designer. He recently oversaw the remodeling of his Atlanta home of which he and Michael were so proud. He had a flare for fashion and interior decorating. Mauricio left his indelible mark on everything as well as everyone he touched.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 18, 2016 from 6-8pm at H.M. Patterson and Son Spring Hill Chapel, 1020 Spring St. NW., Atlanta, Georgia, and a memorial service will also be held at the Spring Hill Chapel on Thursday, May 19, 2016 at 10am With a reception following.
Gifts in memory of Juan Mauricio Ramos Avila may be forwarded to the Atlanta Beltline Partnership, P.O. Box 93351, Atlanta, Georgia 30377 – a project in Atlanta that Mauricio loved and enjoyed and could often be seen there with his husband Michael and his dog Charlie.
